We have a sharepoint site and we’ve noticed that some users automatically access the site when they click on the link while others get a login screen. All users are on the same network. Also, why do some users have to enter “ADS\user id” to log in?

Chosen Answer:

Well, this answer isn’t Sharepoint specific, but I’ll go ahead anyway. Sharepoint is probably requiring a domain authenticated user via Active Directory or LDAP services. Depending on the browser being used to view the site, the user authentication may or may not be negotiated automatically. Usually Internet Explorer 6 or newer will automatically send the user’s credentials (what he or she logged into the Windows session with), whereas Firefox or other non-IE browsers or non-Windows NT/2000/XP operating systems will always prompt for the credentials. The “ADS\user id” refers to a user in the ADS domain. Again, depending on the connection environment, how many domains are available, and whether or not there are repeat usernames (i.e. ADS\John_Doe and OTHERDOMAIN\John_Doe), the domain prefix may or may not be needed.
